Heads up: no class or questline has been announced, and the Riot MMO is still years out (dark since the 2024 reset, with no gameplay ever shown). This is grounded speculation: we read a champion's canon, kit, and home region for what they hint about the MMO. Sourced, labelled, and honest about the unknowns.
Aurora, the Witch Between Worlds
Aurora, the Witch Between Worlds

The Witch Who Was Born Between Two Worlds

AuroraAurora sees two worlds at once. The one everyone lives in, and the spirit realm laid over the top of it, close enough to touch. She has done this since she was born, and she does not treat it as a curse.

Riot's own Champion Spotlight puts her origin plainly, and it doubles as a quest brief.

Early in the Champion Spotlight: Aurora on the move, studying spirits. Riot frames her as a wandering witch who sees the spirit and material worlds at the same time.

That last clause is the whole hook. She left home on purpose, to study spirits and help the ones in trouble. An MMO would not have to invent a reason to push this character out the door and keep her moving. Riot already wrote one.

Her Story Already Splits Into Four Quest Beats

Break the biography into pieces and it stops reading like backstory. It reads like a quest chain with the beats already in order: a hook, a companion you escort, a reveal, and a march to a named finale zone.

A girl who sees the dead and the divine as easily as she sees people. Out on her research, she runs into a wayward demigod who has, in the biography's words, "become twisted and lost to time." He is feral. He is suffering. She decides to help him instead of running.

In quest terms that is your opening beat: an NPC in visible distress, and a choice to follow instead of walk past.

Aurora resolves to help her feral friend "regain his forgotten identity." He is not a boss yet. He is the fragile thing you escort, study, and protect while you work out who he used to be.

The Spotlight describes the loop for you: she wanders "to study and help spirits in need." Travel, observe, mend, repeat. That is a companion arc, not a fetch chain.

The mystery is what he was before time broke him. In the Freljord, demigods are spirits, and spirits can be corrupted (the next section has the canon for both). The payoff is his real name and the shape of what twisted him.

Riot has already staged this exact beat once — the Spirit of Hearth-Home event plays the reveal out in full, name included. The section below walks through it, and it hands an MMO questline a canon ending to build toward.

The biography ends with "a journey that would take her to the farthest reaches of the Freljord." That is your finale zone, stated outright: the frozen far north, the coldest and oldest part of the map.

You do not have to guess where this arc climaxes. The source hands you the destination.

None of that was reverse-engineered from a game mode. It is Aurora's published biography, read start to finish.

The Event That Gave the Name Back: Haestryr

The reveal is not hypothetical — Riot already staged it. The Spirit of Hearth-Home event walks Aurora into Ornn’s forge with her feral friend in tow, and it plays out exactly like the questline sketched above: she asks, the Fire Below the Mountain deflects, and the answer ends up in a book.

Pressed about the elk early on, Ornn gives up exactly one fact — and it is the one that matters. He does not call the creature a stray or a beast. He calls him family.

He’s one of my many siblings. That is all I can tell you.Source: Ornn, The Spirit of Hearth-Home

The name itself surfaces at the very end, in Ornn’s library — Aurora reads it off the page and tries it on her friend.

“Haestryr.” … That’s your name, isn’t it?Source: Aurora, The Spirit of Hearth-Home

So the payoff is canon: the demigod who “lost his name to time” is Haestryr, a sibling of Ornn — the same divine family as Volibear and Anivia, exactly where the spirit canon below places him. The event’s library restores the older names around him too: Ornn was once Ramhaurg, Volibear was Valhir, and the elder Freljord they walked was Vorrijaard.

What a Spirit Actually Is in Runeterra

Aurora's entire job is spirits, so the questline needs a clean answer to one question: what is a spirit here? Our Spirit encyclopedia entry gives one.

Spirits are ethereal beings born from the spirit realm, a parallel dimension that coexists with the physical world of Runeterra and mirrors its emotions, beliefs, and natural forces.Source: Runeterra races: Spirit

Two more lines from that same entry matter for Aurora specifically. First, on her home region:

In the Freljord, the demi-gods Ornn, Volibear, and Anivia are powerful spirits worshipped as deities.Source: Runeterra races: Spirit

So a Freljord demigod is a spirit. Her feral friend being a demigod puts him squarely in that category — and the Spirit of Hearth-Home event put a name to him: Haestryr, one of Ornn’s many siblings. And spirits are not safe from ruin.

Its opposite is the Ruination, the spreading of the Black Mist from the Shadow Isles, a catastrophic corruption in which death magic has twisted spirits into wrathful undead.Source: Runeterra races: Spirit

"Twisted spirits" is the encyclopedia's phrase, not mine, and Aurora's companion is a demigod who became "twisted and lost to time." The corruption of a spirit is a documented failure state in this world. The reveal has something real to hang on.

The Spirits You'd Meet Along the Way

Legends of Runeterra is where Riot draws spirits at close range, one illustration and one line of flavor at a time. Pull the cards that are genuinely about the spirit realm and you get a starter bestiary for Aurora's road. I left out the cards that only use "spirit" as a figure of speech (Demacian resolve, a keepsake worn "in spirit"); a grid of near-misses is worse than no grid.

The Veiled Temple card art, Legends of Runeterra

The Veiled Temple Targon

"It is here, in the Spirit Realm, that Alune communes with her brother Aphelios."

Proof the spirit realm is a place you can stand in and reach through, not just a mood. Aurora's sight only matters if there is somewhere on the other side of it.

Shen card art, Legends of Runeterra

Shen Ionia

"Like hands clasped, the mortal and spirit realms intertwine..."

Ionia is where the veil is thinnest, per the Spirit entry. A natural stop mid-journey, where the two worlds sit almost on top of each other.

Shadow Flare card art, Legends of Runeterra

Shadow Flare Ionia

"When the flows of magic are diverted from their balanced state, they surge from the spirit world into the mortal realm"

What it looks like when spirit magic breaks loose. Good bones for a field hazard, or a spell Aurora teaches you.

Kalista card art, Legends of Runeterra

Kalista Shadow Isles

"an undying spirit of vengeance"

A spirit that curdled into a single purpose. The clearest picture of the failure state Aurora is trying to reverse in her friend.

Mist's Call card art, Legends of Runeterra

Mist's Call Shadow Isles

"The Mist severs spirit from flesh, leaving behind a foul parody of life."

The mechanism of spirit corruption, named on the card. This is what "twisted" does to a spirit when nobody steps in.

Ursine Spiritwalker card art, Legends of Runeterra

Ursine Spiritwalker Freljord

"The Ursine begin as humans, but give up the familiar trappings of their mortal lives for the feral, savage power granted by the great spirit of the Volibear."

Freljord, feral, and bound to a demigod-spirit. The closest card we have to Aurora's companion, and proof the region already grows spirit-touched people.

Read together they sketch the arc: a place you can reach through (The Veiled Temple), a border where the worlds blur (Shen), the magic going wrong (Shadow Flare), and the end state Aurora is fighting (Kalista, Mist's Call). The one from home, Ursine Spiritwalker, is the closest thing to her companion that already has a card.

The Road North Is Already Painted

The road itself is not a blank. Riot's Visions of the Freljord concept work already drew the country Aurora crosses, and our region gallery hosts it. Start with the middle of the journey, the long haul across the tundra.

Sometimes, the frozen sea routes take longer than usual to open up again. Impatient raiders may sacrifice a ship or two to build harnesses for their beasts of burden, dragging the rest to open water in an attempt to outpace their less enterprising rivals.Source: The Freljord gallery: A Tribe on the Move

That is a traversal problem with a built-in answer. The tundra also comes with mounts.

In spite of its harsh and unforgiving climate, the Freljord is home to a wide variety of fantastical fauna, particularly suited to life there.Source: The Freljord gallery: Beast Riders

Rakelstake, a real pilgrim site in the concept art, is the kind of place a questline parks a hub: somewhere to resupply before the last stretch. And the last stretch is the far north, where Riot buried its oldest and worst thing.

One day, when the Watchers reawaken, these meager defenses may buy some precious time for those above to prepare for the final battle.Source: The Freljord gallery: Holding Back the Darkness

The Watchers are the horror sealed under the ice, and the Frostguard patrol them like a countdown nobody wants to end.

Warriors of the Keeper's Lodge diligently patrol the locations of some of the largest known Watchers, or at least those closest to the icy surface.Source: The Freljord gallery: Eyes in the Abyss

Aurora's biography sends her "to the farthest reaches of the Freljord," and this is what waits out there. Whether her companion's story touches the Watchers or not, the endgame terrain is already built, and it is genuinely frightening.

What You'd Actually Do in a Fight

Her League kit reads like the verbs you would press on that road, and the Spotlight spells each one out.

You collect spirits as you go. Her passive, Spirit Abjuration, "frees a wayward spirit" from enemies she hits; it heals her and speeds her up, and she can "shepherd up to 4 spirit buddies at a time." A questline about escorting one lost spirit already has spirit-gathering baked into the moment-to-moment.

You slip between the worlds. Her W, Across the Veil, has her "vanish into the spirit realm, becoming invisible for a short time." That is a traversal and stealth tool sitting in a combat kit, exactly the trick a witch who lives on the border would use to get past a threat instead of through it.

You pin the thing you are hunting. Her ultimate, Between Worlds, "opens a rift that blends the spirit and material realms" and traps enemies inside it with her. Fold that up to boss scale and you have the finale mechanic: a small arena where the corrupted demigod cannot simply leave.

She is short-ranged and hates being cornered, so the fantasy is a mobile, tricky spellcaster rather than a bruiser. If you want to see how that plays live, her analytics page tracks it. The Spotlight sums the whole character up in one line: she is "ready to rescue spirits across the Rift."

Would You Walk It?

Live poll

If the Riot MMO opened with Aurora's questline across the Freljord, would you play it?

None of this is announced. Aurora's questline is a reading of her canon, not a leak, and Riot has shown no MMO gameplay since the 2024 reset. What is real is the material: a biography, a spirit-realm encyclopedia entry, a card set, and a region's concept art that all point the same way. Sources: Aurora's biography, our Spirit entry, and Legends of Runeterra card flavor, all Riot's own canon. A RuneGrove lore read.
