Heads up: the news here is real and sourced. The read on what it means for the unannounced Riot MMO is ours, and speculative where labelled. RuneGrove covers everything through one lens: what it tells us about the MMO.

What Happened

Riot opened MSI 2026 Finals day by selling its own players their past. League Classic got its full reveal in Daejeon on July 11 (July 12 in KST), and it rewinds Summoner's Rift to the Season 3 era: around 60 champions with their pre-rework kits, long-removed items, the legacy runes and masteries, and the old interface from champion select through the rune and mastery pages.

The same company is building a Runeterra MMO, and the question that project keeps circling is how much old-school depth modern players actually want back. League Classic reads like Riot testing an answer at full scale.

The mode is a curated 'greatest hits' anchored on Season 3, with pieces pulled from earlier and later patches up to Season 4. This is not a clean modern build wearing old paint. It is the messier, less convenient League, chosen on purpose.

The reveal ended with a showmatch that put ten legendary pros back on the old Rift. Team Baron, with Ambition and Doublelift, took the win. The pick-ban ran through pre-rework Karthus, Amumu, Alistar, Skarner, and Kassadin, champions whose kits have all been overhauled since and were played here in kits most people stopped seeing years ago.

There is no separate client to install. League Classic ships as a Featured Game Mode, so it turns up in the same in-client mode picker where Arena and URF appear. It goes live July 29, 2026 (July 30 in KST) with Patch 26.15.

Riot conceded to the leaks on this one. Streamer slips and PBE datamines had already spilled the project by early June, so on June 26 it confirmed League Classic and promised the full reveal at MSI.

What This Means for the Riot MMO

Start with the one hard fact underneath the read. Riot rebooted its Runeterra MMO in 2024 because the first attempt looked too much like the MMOs players already had. Everything past this point is our interpretation, not Riot's stated plan.

League Classic answers a version of the MMO's core question out loud. Riot picked Season 3 as the era worth preserving, restored around 60 champions with their rougher old kits, and brought back legacy runes, masteries, and removed items instead of a cleaner modern loadout. That is a company deciding, on the record, that the deeper and less convenient version of its game is the one worth freezing.

That instinct is the whole subject of the old-school MMO Riot walked away from being rebuilt in public, where the team keeps circling back to the friction and hand-made depth it once tried to sand off. League Classic is the same pull, aimed at live League instead of a new world.

Because it ships at League's scale with no download, Riot gets real behavior data on whether nostalgia and friction actually sell, not just whether players say they miss the old days. That is the exact call the ex-WoW-heavy MMO combat team faces when it decides how much legacy complexity a Runeterra world should carry. We have read Riot's smaller signals this way before, from what Zaahen could mean for the MMO to what Hwei could mean for it. This is a much louder one.

The legacy-server question lands on systems too, not just champions. Old items and old masteries were a different economy of choices, and how much of that a modern game should carry is the kind of decision we dug into in the Riot MMO's grand economic blueprint. A classic or legacy server forces the same trade between preservation and convenience.

The honest version of the connection is not that the MMO copies League Classic. It is that Riot now has a live nostalgia test running at scale, and it can read the results before committing a single legacy system to the MMO.

The read for the MMO:
  • Picking Season 3 as the era to freeze is a design statement: the version worth preserving is the deeper, less convenient one, the same call a legacy Runeterra MMO server would have to make.
  • Bringing back 60 champions in their old, since-replaced kits is Riot betting that the complexity and jank players once knew beats a cleaner modern build, a tension the MMO's combat team weighs directly.
  • As a Featured Game Mode with no download, League Classic lets Riot test nostalgia against live League at scale, giving the MMO real player-behavior data before it commits to legacy content.

Should Riot's Runeterra MMO offer classic or legacy servers that freeze an older era of the game?
