Argoth

Creature of Runeterra

An insectoid species of Demacia that a lone soldier can face one-on-one, yet that overwhelms its foes in queen-led swarms moving as a single body.

Argoths are an insectoid species native to Demacia, standing at roughly the scale of a grown person. For all their insect form, they are counted among the sentient creatures of the region. A single argoth is not especially dangerous. Fighting one alone is easy enough, and a lone soldier can meet one on even terms and expect to come out ahead. The threat lies entirely in numbers. Argoths rarely appear alone and rely on overwhelming numbers to defeat direct attacks, closing on their targets in swarms large enough to cancel out the weakness of any one of them. Left undivided, such a swarm will slaughter a defending force long before it can be broken. That coordination comes from a hive queen whose dominating will governs the rest of the swarm. Under her direction the entire mass moves and fights as a single vicious unit, striking with one purpose. Her death undoes it: with the queen slain, the swarm's unity is broken and the argoths can be cut down with ease. One such assault entered Demacian record when a swarm larger than any yet seen bore down on the village of Evenmoor. The generals Ibell and Miesar counseled Prince Jarvan that any charge would have to fight through hundreds of argoth to reach the queen marked at the heart of the horde. Rather than meet the swarm head-on, Jarvan hid his fiercest fighters within Evenmoor to ambush the queen from within and shatter the swarm by killing her. Where the argoths make their nests has not been recorded.
