Chirean

Creature of Runeterra

Zaun's Firelights count bat-like Chirean members, not Vastaya, despite the resemblance.

The Chirean are a sapient, bat-like humanoid species native to the deep caverns and sump levels of Zaun, the toxic undercity beneath Piltover. They are a distinct biological race that evolved on its own, not a product of hextech augmentation, which sets them apart from much of Zaun's populace who reshape their bodies with technology. Even so, they carry a seemingly native understanding of machinery and craft. Two bloodlines are known among them: the more bestial Nocti and the more humanoid Fulgor. The Fulgor are the kind glimpsed walking among the people of the undercity, and the bat-like members of the Firelights, the band of Zaunite youths who defy the powers ruling the twin cities, are Chirean rather than a lost tribe of any other people. Their striking, chiropteran appearance gives them a look unlike any other race in the twin cities. Because they are chimeric beings with animal features, the Chirean are frequently mistaken for Vastaya, a confusion the wider world has repeated since they first became widely known. They are not Vastaya. That term belongs only to the descendants of the Vastayashai'rei, whose lineage grants an innate bond with spiritual magic. The Chirean share no such origin. They are a non-magical people who evolved entirely separately, and their kinship with bats owes nothing to the spirit magic that defines the true Vastaya.
