Giant Crab
A sentient, spike-shelled crab from the seas of Bilgewater, domesticated by local merchants to haul heavy goods on its back.
The Giant Crab is a large, sentient crustacean native to the seas around Bilgewater. It is easy to recognize by its coarse, heavily spiked shell and the pair of wide, oval eyes with which it watches the world. Its natural home is among the coastal reefs, but the species also lives within the region's settlements, where the crabs share the streets and docks with the people who dwell there.
Bilgewater's merchants long ago learned to tame the creature and put it to work. A domesticated Giant Crab will bear heavy cargo strapped across its broad back, which makes it a sturdy and practical means of hauling goods through the port and the surrounding region.
The wild giant crabs of the deep sea caves are a far more dangerous prospect. There they reach the size of small wagons, each brandishing a single great blue claw powerful enough to snip a man in two. When Tobias Felix and Malcolm Graves came hunting the Abyssal Crown, a blind old sea witch roused a whole swarm of the beasts from the darkness clinging to the cave walls, and they came skittering and chittering up out of the black water to tear the two thieves apart. Graves shattered their claws and shells with his gunfire while Fate scattered them with bursts of sorcerous card-magic. The crabs answered the witch and the colossal deep-dwelling thing she served, one of the Beasts Below, which reached through a rift and seized a crab in a tentacle to whip it away. Once the witch's grip faltered, the few crabs that remained milled about in confusion amid the flooding cave.
