Kraken
Legendary tentacled deep-sea monsters capable of crushing warships.
The kraken is a legendary deep-sea monster of almost mythical proportion, a mass of tentacles that dwells in the deepest trenches of the ocean surrounding Bilgewater. To the sailors and pirates of that lawless port it is both nightmare and object of reverence, a horror out of the unfathomable deep that can seize a warship in its coils and drag it beneath the waves. Few who cross its path live to describe it, and the stories that survive only grow in the telling.
In Bilgewater the kraken is bound up with faith as much as fear. Many hold that the creatures answer to Nagakabouros, the Great Kraken the islanders also call the Bearded Lady and Mother Below, the Buhru deity of life, motion, and endless change. Her Truth Bearer, the priestess Illaoi, carries the Eye of God, a golden idol through which the god's will manifests as massive spectral tentacles that slam down to test the spiritual strength of any who stand before them. Whether or not the deep-dwelling krakens truly serve her, the connection has made the monster a living symbol of her god's raw and unstoppable power.
More than any single beast, the kraken embodies the ocean itself as Bilgewater understands it: vast, indifferent, and utterly untamable. It is the shape that dread takes when the mist rolls in and hungry eyes seem to watch from below, a reminder that the sea keeps its own counsel and answers to no mortal law.
