Octopus

Creature of Runeterra

Its single-eyed kin near the Abyssal Crown proved an omen of a colossal horror from the deep.

The octopus is a soft-bodied, eight-limbed mollusc common to the seas around Runeterra, and a familiar sight in the waters and tide caves of Bilgewater. It is a carnivore, small and pliable enough to fold itself into buckets and crevices, yet quick when it chooses to move, hauling its rubbery body across dry stone with its tentacles at surprising speed. In Bilgewater the creature's parts turn up as ornaments of stolen status. When the upstart Captain Thorne rose from tattered sackcloth to gaudy finery, he crossed Sarah Fortune at a sea-captains' funeral wearing an expensive kraken-skin coat, a glistening stingray flat-cap, and a fresh octopus-tentacle tie, dressing far above the man he truly was. Octopi also run through the region's darker sea legends. When Tobias Felix and Malcolm Graves hunted the Abyssal Crown, they found a single-eyed octopus lurking beneath an upturned bucket in a flooded cave, its great yellow eye watching them as it scooted backward across the floor. The gangly thing climbed the sleeping blind sea witch who guarded the crown and fastened itself over her face like a grotesque bonnet, and when she woke she named the two thieves drowned men already promised to the Beasts Below. The small mollusc proved an omen of something far larger. Through a rift torn in the air, a colossal eye and lashing tentacles appeared, identical to the octopus but a thousand times its size, reaching up from the deepest ocean dark. Graves blew one tentacle clean off in a spray of blue blood before the beast could drag him under.
