Rift Herald
A Void-spawned beast with a glowing eye, found in the baron pit before Nashor appears.
The Rift Herald is a Void-spawned creature that occupies the baron pit on Summoner's Rift during the early stages of a match, before Baron Nashor fully manifests in its place. Its body is sheathed in chitinous armor, and a single glowing eye sits on its back, the one vulnerable point an attacker must strike. Slow but immensely powerful, it fights as a battering force of nature.
The Herald's defining trait is what happens after it falls. When killed, its eye can be claimed and carried by a champion, then released to summon the creature back into the world. The recalled Herald charges down a lane and hurls itself at enemy turrets, smashing through fortifications that would otherwise take a team minutes to grind down. This makes it one of the most valuable early objectives on the Rift and a precursor to Baron Nashor, whose destruction can swing the momentum of a match.
The Herald did not always serve this role. In its earlier form it functioned as a stat-granting buff, rewarding the team that slew it with a temporary boost rather than a mobile siege weapon. The Midseason 2017 update reworked it entirely, transforming the creature into the summonable siege engine it is known as today. The change was documented in the Midseason 2017 Spotlight, an official video released that May that walked players through the season's systemic shifts alongside adjustments to tank itemization and several champions.
The rework reshaped how fights unfolded across the top side of the map. Where earlier metas had favored a passive approach of farming until the dragon spawned, the summonable Herald rewarded early aggression and proactive coordination. Teams began contesting the eye and timing their pushes around it, making the creature not just a monster in the pit but a strategic fulcrum for the whole early game.
