Rimefang Wolf
Saving a hawk from one won Ulla Shatter-Spear nearly a century of Anivia's protection.
The rimefang wolf is a carnivorous subspecies of wolf native to the northern reaches of the Freljord. These pack hunters are marked by coats of white fur crusted with ice and by eyes that glow a cold blue, blending into the frozen wilds where great warriors are forged or frozen.
Rimefang wolves hold a place in the martial culture of the Freljord, where their remains are worked into the tools of war. Urkath, one of the hunters who rode with Sejuani of the Winter's Claw and the berserker Olaf, carried a great longsword whose hilt was worked from the jawbones of a rimefang wolf, its blade sharp enough to cut stone. To arm oneself with such a trophy is a mark of a formidable hunter, for the beasts are dangerous prey.
The wolves also appear in the oldest legends of the region. Among the Avarosan is the tale of Ulla Shatter-Spear, an Iceborn warmother who won the favor of the Cryophoenix Anivia by saving a young hawk from a rimefang wolf. Across the whole of Ulla's life, which spanned nearly a hundred winters, Anivia is said to have protected her from harm, and to have welcomed her with wings spread wide when she finally fell in battle.
Such is the creature's reputation that outsiders have sought it out. One scout of Bandle City journeyed all the way to the Freljord hoping to track down a rimefang wolf and keep one as a pet, only for the fearsome pack he found to reveal itself as poros that the mage Lulu had polymorphed to spoil his mission.
