Vilemaw

Creature of Runeterra

A colossal spider-god of the Shadow Isles, worshipped by Elise and her followers.

Vilemaw is a colossal spider-god that makes its home in the lightless depths beneath the Shadow Isles, a bloated, chitinous creature of the long-forgotten past. It dwells far below the ruins of the cursed city of Helia, where the surrounding land is haunted by spiteful wraiths and where few living intruders ever return. Ancient and malevolent, the monster is the object of a Vilemaw-worshipping cult that offers up lives in exchange for its dark blessings. The god's most consequential victim was Elise, a Noxian aristocrat of the Black Rose who sailed to the Isles in search of the skull of the ancient warlord Sahn-Uzal. As she and her devotees searched the depths beneath Helia, Vilemaw erupted from the darkness to devour the intruders and sank its fangs into Elise's shoulder. The venom wrought terrible changes upon her: her spine rippled, arachnoid legs pushed out from her flesh, and she rose transformed. When she turned to find the creature looming above her, an unspoken understanding passed between them, and she left the Isles untroubled by their spirits. From that pact came an enduring arrangement. Vilemaw grants Elise the power to shift between her human form and that of a massive spider, sustaining her youth and beauty, but the gift demands renewal. She must return to the Shadow Isles bearing human sacrifices to feed her patron, luring unwitting victims from Noxus with promises of power on expeditions that serve only as feeding trips. Through this bargain the Black Rose gained safe passage between Noxus and the Isles, while Vilemaw remains in its caverns, fed by a steady procession of offerings and worshipped as a dark god by those who crave what its venom can bestow.
