Wyvern

The wyvern is a large winged predator of the Demacian hinterlands, a carnivorous beast counted among the dragon family and often mistaken for a true dragon at a distance. What sets it apart is its build. Where a dragon walks on four legs, a wyvern stands on only two and beats a single pair of wings, their spans stretched with membranes that catch the wind like great leaves. In Demacia the creature is a wild menace of the far-flung countryside. It shares the open meadows and roadsides with briar wolves and highwaymen, and preys on the farms and villages scattered through the kingdom's remote corners. When the yordle Poppy wandered from hamlet to hamlet in search of a fabled hero, the beasts she was forced to put down in self-defense numbered wyverns among the wolves. The anonymous monster slayer she pursued had earned a festival and a stone likeness in his honor precisely for ridding the land of such threats, saving numerous farms and villages from wyverns, rabid wolves, and bandits before he was last spotted near the town of Uwendale. Wyverns are not bound to Demacia alone. Far to the east, near the Ionian coast, travelers speak of the southern-isles wyvern, a variety whose broad membranous wings are wide enough to be compared to the massive leaves of a living tree grown as a ship's mast, a likeness drawn by those crossing the straits toward Zhyun.
