Demacian Mageseekers

The Mageseekers are a powerful order within Demacia charged with identifying and detaining magic users. Founded in the early Demacian era to shield the populace from uncontrolled magic, they have grown into a feared institution that hunts mages across the kingdom from their seat in Demacia City. Their signature tool is petricite, a magic-absorbing stone they wield to track down and contain anyone who displays magical ability. In a kingdom that systematically hunts and imprisons those born with power, even the most harmless gifts draw suspicion. When Sona's guardian Lestara came to believe the girl's instrument was a fabled etwahl, an object of ancient magic older than Demacia itself, she urged Sona to keep it secret rather than risk the mageseekers' attention. Sona could not understand how something that brought people peace could be seen as a threat. The same fear shadows Lux of the noble Crownguard house, a light mage whose exposure would ruin her family and the military career of her brother Garen, commander of the Dauntless Vanguard. The order's reach has only widened. In the wake of King Jarvan III's assassination, the mageseekers gained significant power, and innocent citizens were persecuted for any supposed connection to magic, their authority coming to rival the crown itself. This oppression bred open resistance, most directly in the mage rebellion led by Sylas, once their prisoner. The mageseekers remain active, opposed by Sylas's rebels and by the Illuminators, their petricite and their hunters still turned against every spark of magic within Demacia's borders.
