Galrin

Location in Runeterra

The monastery here raised the orphaned Sona until monks smuggled her to Demacia ahead of Noxus.

Galrin is an island in the Houhjo region of Ionia, one of two that make up Houhjo alongside Sudaro, set toward the southern end of the Ionian Archipelago. In older accounts it is spoken of as a province in its own right, home to quiet villages and at least one Ionian monastery. That monastery is remembered as the place where the musician Sona spent her earliest years. Its monks, aided by kindhearted volunteers from the local villages, took in any orphans and foundlings left at the front gates and made sure they wanted for nothing. Sona was among them, discovered as a child with a single possession, a curiously strung instrument packed into a plain wooden case, which she taught herself to play until her melodies moved even skeptical listeners to tears. Galrin's peace was broken more than once. During the years Ionia's southern mountains were plagued by the killer known as the Golden Demon, later revealed to be Khada Jhin, the slaughter spread throughout the province of Zhyun and reached as far as Shon-Xan and Galrin, where scores of travelers and sometimes whole farmsteads were butchered and left in twisted displays. Later, the empire of Noxus began landing troops in Ionia's northern provinces, and the monks of Galrin resolved to evacuate their young charges before the invasion could reach the island. After their caretakers struck a deal with a Demacian trader, Sona and a handful of her friends were bundled aboard one of the last ships to slip out before the Noxian blockade of Ionia's western coast, carrying her away to Demacia. Galrin endures as an inhabited part of the First Lands.
