Great City of Demacia

Location in Runeterra

Founded as a refuge from sorcery after the Rune Wars, built on petricite that dampens magic.

The Great City of Demacia is the capital of the kingdom of Demacia, set in the western part of the realm and home to most of its noble houses. It was founded as a refuge from sorcery after the Rune Wars and built upon the riddle of petricite, a white stone that dampens magical energy. From within its walls the royal family has long overseen the defense of Demacia's outlying towns, farmland, forests, and mineral-rich mountains. To many Demacians the city is a monument to the kingdom's noble ideals, a place where every citizen is meant to be protected. When the young Lux Crownguard first traveled here to witness her brother Garen's investiture, the city dazzled her, and it was here she learned of the Illuminators, a charitable order devoted to helping the sick and the poor. The Great City is the seat of the crown and the heart of Demacian military honor. In the Hall of Valor, King Jarvan III honored returning warriors before the royal court, and there Garen was recommended for the trials of the Dauntless Vanguard and swore his oaths before the throne. As home to the noble houses, the city is also a stage for their rivalries; Fiora Laurent settled a bitter feud over her family's name in a public duel before the king. Vigil over the capital falls in part to Galio, the towering petricite colossus who stands dormant as a statue for years, decades, even centuries at a time, rousing only when enough nearby magic saturates his stone to shield the people before he returns to stillness. For all its grandeur, the Great City now presides over a kingdom in turmoil. The people's deep distrust of mages and magic sits uneasily beside the very ideals on which the realm was founded, and after the sudden death of King Jarvan III, the noble families have not yet approved his heir's succession to the throne. Some whisper that the golden age of Demacia has passed, and that all the petricite in the land will not protect Demacia from itself.
