The Spirit Realm

Location in Runeterra

Parallel spirit dimension alongside Runeterra, closely tied to Ionia.

The Spirit Realm is a parallel dimension that runs alongside the material world of Runeterra, invisible to most mortals yet just as vibrant and full of life. It is home to spirits, yordles, and beings that defy mortal understanding, and it holds sub-realms such as Bandle City. The realm is shaped by the emotions and beliefs of mortals in the physical world, and Kinkou teaching describes the two worlds as sides of the same leaf, sharing the same roots: when one darkens, the other dims. The boundary between worlds is thinnest in Ionia, where creatures like the silver boar are born of the connection between realms, the vastaya count themselves half of spirit and half of form, and the swordsmen of the Wuju school draw the realm's power into their blades. The Noxian invasion broke this balance. Lives ended unnaturally left spirits lingering with noxious intent, polluting the spirit realm and turning its backlash against all life in the material realm, the very harm the Kinkou are charged with preventing. Ionians answer this closeness with ritual. At the spirit blossom festival, the living drink spirit tea to speak with lost loved ones before those spirits return to the realm in peace, and old tales tell of the Gatekeeper, often pictured as a fox, who guides the dead through the spirit realm toward rest. The blossoms stayed away through the long war with Noxus, and their return brought the first festival in a generation. The realm's reach runs far beyond Ionia. In the Freljord, the vastaya Aurora sees both realms at once and can open doorways between them, guiding home the wayward spirits set loose when mortal affairs disturb the balance. On Mount Targon, the temple Marus Omegnum phases in from the spirit realm across long celestial cycles, and the Lunari seer Alune now dwells within it beyond the veil. The realm has also known twilight. Near the end of the Rune Wars, warrior-mages cast off their flesh to stalk one another beyond the veil, and shadow mages came to dominate the spirit realm, darkening the dreams of mortals everywhere. From that suffering rose the demon Nocturne, terror made manifest, who now slips into the waking world at the border where sleeping minds drift between realms. The spirit realm remains inhabited, and inseparable from the world it mirrors.
