Hextech

Hextech is the fusion of magic and technology pioneered in Piltover, the City of Progress. It channels rune magic through scientific and mathematical engineering, encasing magical crystals in precision-built devices making magical power usable by anyone, not only the rare few born with an innate gift for the arcane. The crystals at its heart were originally the namestones of the ancient Brackern, and mastering them turned Piltover into the most advanced city on Runeterra. The technology's defining minds were Jayce Talis and Viktor. Jayce, celebrated as the Man of Progress and later the Defender of Tomorrow, built a transforming hextech greathammer powered by a Shuriman crystal shard, a weapon renowned throughout Piltover that could shift mid-swing into a blaster firing orbs of voltaic lightning. Viktor pursued a darker path, developing an adaptive runic matrix he called the hexcore to fuel his Glorious Evolution. When he stole Jayce's crystal to power an army of automatons, Jayce tracked the resonant shard into the sump of Zaun and shattered the crystal, collapsing the machines around him. Hextech extends well beyond weapons. Vi enforces Piltover's law with hextech Atlas gauntlets that hum with variable levels of force and can punch through walls, while stolen hextech artifacts keep the city's thieves and wardens in constant conflict. Camille, principal intelligencer of Clan Ferros, volunteered decades ago to have her legs replaced with bladed hextech limbs and her heart excised and replaced with a hextech crystal, an augmentation that halts her aging and keeps her lethal into her eighties. The crystals are not inert. A shard given to the singer Seraphine carried a consciousness born of brackern blood, singing of distant deserts and ancestral history. That sentience is the source of hextech's hidden cost: its power draws on the souls of the Brackern, an ethical secret buried at the foundation of Piltover's progress. Closely tied to chemtech and shimmer, hextech is reliable and reproducible, yet it can destabilize into catastrophic explosions, a danger even Heimerdinger was slow to recognize.
