Demon
Malevolent spiritual entities that feed on specific negative emotions and primal fears.
Demons are among the oldest and most feared entities in Runeterra, spiritual beings that predate most mortal civilizations. Where ordinary spirits may be benign or neutral, demons are fundamentally parasitic: they sustain themselves by provoking and consuming mortal suffering. Each demon is attuned to a single negative emotion or primal fear, whether agony, addiction, nightmares, or dread itself, and has shaped its form and abilities to draw that feeling out of its victims and feed on it. The more a demon feeds, the more powerful it grows, which makes these entities progressively harder to contain or destroy the longer they go unchecked. Whether they evolved into these specialized hungers or were always designed for them is unknown.
Several demons are notorious enough to be named. Fiddlesticks, the Ancient Fear, may be the oldest of them all, a primordial terror said to have haunted mortals since the first spark of sentient thought. Evelynn, the demon of agony, takes the shape of a beautiful woman to lure her victims close before revealing her true, monstrous nature. Tahm Kench, the River King, feeds on addiction and greed, offering mortals their heart's desire in exchange for everything else they hold dear. Nocturne feeds on nightmares, stalking the sleeping mind. Briar is a newer kind of demon entirely, the product of a hemomantic experiment gone wrong that produced a creature driven by relentless hunger.
Within Runeterra's spiritual ecosystem, demons occupy a distinct place as specialized predators rather than simple embodiments of evil, having adapted specifically to exploit mortal psychology. Nearly every culture preserves legends and warnings about them, though their true nature is rarely understood. Across Bilgewater and the southern rivers, Tahm Kench is known as a deal-maker whose bargains always carry a hidden cost, while Fiddlesticks survives in folklore as the nameless, shapeless thing that lurks in the dark. Places where demons have fed tend to earn lasting reputations as cursed or haunted ground.
