Dragon

Race of Runeterra

An umbrella race covering all reptilian beings of draconic descent, split by origin into Celestial and Terrestrial Dragons that resemble each other by imitation.

Dragon functions as a broad category rather than a single creature. Across the Multiverse, the label covers every being with reptilian anatomy descended from draconic ancestry. Those beings divide into two groups based on where they came from: Celestial Dragons and Terrestrial Dragons. The split is a matter of origin rather than blood. The two groups share no genetic relationship, and their resemblance to one another is the result of imitation, since the terrestrial variety once modeled itself on the celestial one. Both groups draw on Earth's dragon myths, a body of tradition that varies widely in how the creature looks and what cultures make of it. That variation carries into Runeterra, where dragons appear in a range of forms. As a sapient race, dragons belong to the mortal category and speak a language of their own, named Dragon after the race itself. Riot's games present dragons that are not playable as powerful opponents. League of Legends places the terrestrial kind in the dragon pit on Summoner's Rift, where they appear as Epic Monsters called drakes. Legends of Runeterra treats them as a distinct class of strong units whose power increases as they kill. Champions with ties to the race include Aurelion Sol, Shyvana, Jarvan IV, Pantheon, Viego, Nilah, and Zoe.
