Living Weapon
Sentient beings created or reshaped as instruments of war.
Living Weapons are sentient beings created or reshaped specifically as instruments of war, designed to think, adapt, and fight from their inception. Across Runeterra's history, war-makers have pursued the perfect combatant through magic and machinery, and the results are invariably dangerous. A thinking being made for violence tends to develop its own agenda, and living weapon projects share a recurring fate: they turn on their creators.
The clearest example is Briar, a creation of the Black Rose, the shadowy cabal of hemomancers in Noxus. Near the end of his reign, Grand General Boram Darkwill entrusted the cabal with making a new kind of living weapon, and where their earlier experiments worked on the deceased, Briar was a being born from and fueled by blood, driven to hunt her targets without needing food or water. Her creators wanted an assassin; what they got was an insatiable appetite. When her first mission ended in a frenzied, gory failure, the Black Rose judged her too dangerous to use but too powerful to destroy, and bound her in a pillory locked by a hemolith gemstone to suppress her hunger and focus her mind. She was deployed alongside the cabal's other living weapons during Jericho Swain's coup against Darkwill, only to devour her own handler and everyone near her while Swain escaped. Recaptured and confined for years, she overheard the crazed wails of other living weapons locked nearby, learned partial control over her frenzies, and eventually freed herself to roam the streets of Noxus, her pillory locked back in place until she chooses to unlock it.
Older and more terrible are the Darkin, living weapons created in a bygone age. Once ancient Ascended god-warriors, they were corrupted during the Darkin War and bound into blades and bows, and the Aspect of War later scoured the world hunting them. Varus embodies this horror: a Darkin imprisoned within a living weapon whose bow lay dormant for millennia until two mortally wounded Ionian hunters, the lovers Valmar and Kai, merged with it to survive and released the Darkin inside. Three consciousnesses now war within one body, Varus seeking vengeance while Valmar and Kai fight to keep their humanity. Even among the Ascended the impulse recurs, as Renekton became a living weapon of war while his brother Nasus turned to knowledge.
Living weapons raise the sharpest moral questions in Runeterra, since they are brought into existence solely to destroy yet must live with what they are made to be. Beyond individual champions, factions from Zaun's chemtech laboratories to Shurima's ancient magical guardians have attempted the same feat, and their failures point to a single truth about sentience: control imposed on a mind is only ever temporary.
