Revenant

Race of Runeterra

Beings who returned from death through willpower or dark magic, retaining full agency.

Revenants are beings who have returned from death, or transcended it, through sheer force of will, dark magic, or unique circumstances rather than the Black Mist of the Shadow Isles. Unlike the undead raised by that curse, revenants retain full consciousness and agency, and each is driven by unfinished business or an overwhelming purpose. No two returns are alike, for the manner of a revenant's revival is shaped by the death that claimed them and the force that dragged them back. Sion is Noxus made flesh and iron. Once a mighty warrior-king, he was killed in battle against the Demacian king Jarvan I, and centuries later Noxian blood mages hauled him back as an unstoppable war machine. He keeps fragments of his old memories and personality, but they are drowned beneath an insatiable rage that makes him nearly impossible to control, even by the masters who raised him. In Noxus he is both weapon and symbol: his undying fury embodies the empire's reverence for strength and perseverance, yet his violence is as dangerous to allies as to enemies. Older still is Mordekaiser, the Iron Revenant. In life the warrior-king Sahn-Uzal, he refused to fade into oblivion after death as the lesser spirits around him dissolved, his will held together by rage and torment. He whispered temptations across the veil until a coven of sorcerers resolved to bring him back, and, lacking flesh, he had them bind his spirit in dark metal plates wrought in the likeness of his old armor. So he rose, a hulking revenant of iron and hate, and slew the sorcerers who had hoped to wield him. Taking his spirit-name in the profane tongue Ochnun, he forged the mace Nightfall from their souls and raised the Immortal Bastion at the heart of his death-fueled empire. An alliance of the Noxii tribes and a betrayal from within eventually severed his soul's anchors from the armor and sealed the empty shell away, but he had planned even for that, building the Afterworld from the spirits of all who had died under his reign. Not every revenant is a conqueror. Yone was killed by his own brother, Yasuo, and his spirit was pulled into the spirit realm, where he battled the lesser demons called azakana before returning to the living world wearing a demon's mask, now hunting those spiritual predators across Ionia. His return is met with suspicion there, where the boundary between the living and the dead is meant to be sacred. Revenants unsettle every culture that meets them, challenging the meaning of mortality itself and the uneasy question of whether a soul that comes back is truly the same one that died.
