Drakebane
The legendary dragon-slaying lance of Demacia's Lightshield royal dynasty.
Drakebane is the legendary lance of the Demacian royal line, carried by Jarvan IV, Crown Prince of the Lightshield dynasty. It is a long silver lance set with gemstones and lined with spikes along its length, surprisingly light in the hand and perfectly balanced, the work of a master at the peak of his craft. It was forged in Demacia's infancy by the renowned weaponsmith Orlon and wrought to defeat the great frostdrake Maelstrom and her progeny, who had plagued the kingdom's early settlers. From that dragon-slaying feat come both its name and its standing as a symbol of the royal house.
For much of its history the lance was little more than ceremonial, an icon of the ruling family. The secret of how to fight with it had been lost since the reign of Demacia's first kings, and in unskilled hands it was as dangerous to its wielder as to any enemy. Across those centuries it endured as a revered emblem of the kingdom, held to be as much a symbol of Demacian greatness as the crown of the king or the towering white walls of the capital.
The art of wielding it was recovered by Xin Zhao, the king's seneschal, who trained with the lance every day before dawn for years until he understood it well enough to teach. When Jarvan IV was still a boy, he dreamed of fighting with Drakebane like the heroes of old, and Xin Zhao promised to teach him when he was ready. On his sixteenth birthday the prince was presented with the weapon by his father. He trained relentlessly, suffering countless self-inflicted injuries, until he fought with it as if it were an extension of himself, his skill eventually surpassing even his teacher's.
In Jarvan's hands the lance is a deadly instrument. With a flick he can extend its haft to nearly double its length, its bladed tip slicing at blinding speed, as he showed when he pressed Xin Zhao in a brutal sparring bout. Passed down through the Lightshield dynasty and carried into battle by every Demacian ruler, Drakebane remains a mark of royal authority and Demacian valor, and Jarvan bears it as both a weapon and a reminder of his duty to protect his people.
