Heads up: the news here is real and sourced. The read on what it means for the unannounced Riot MMO is ours, and speculative where labelled. RuneGrove covers everything through one lens: what it tells us about the MMO.

Source: ArcheAge Chronicles (XLGAMES / Kakao Games). Verified against multiple sources; datamines and reports are labelled as such, not stated as fact.

What Happened

A rival just did the one thing Riot won't. On July 10, XLGAMES and Kakao Games walked through exactly how the Warrior fights in ArcheAge Chronicles, their Unreal Engine 5 action MMORPG headed for a 2026 launch on PC, Xbox Series S/X, and PlayStation 5. Named abilities, parry timing, the whole kit. Riot's Runeterra MMO, years into development, still hasn't shown a single class or a second of combat.

The Warrior wields a longsword or a greatsword, and each plays differently. The longsword splits into two paths: one built on timing, precision, and control, where you defend and parry incoming strikes and punish with named skills like Closing Clash and Bladeburst, and a 'path of blood' that converts the Warrior's own health into damage and drains enemy HP back. The greatsword plays the front line, building a Resolve resource before unleashing Final Cleave, Rampage, and Warrior's Cry. The pitch is 'Hold the Line. Break the Enemy.' In the lore it 'inherits the shadow of Kyrios, the God of Destruction,' which is flavor, but it's flavor bolted to specific weapons and specific ways of playing.

The part that should sting for anyone watching Riot is that the reveal came with receipts. The class breakdown landed a week after XLGAMES published an infographic from its June focus-group test, 165 players across 2,006 hours, listing the top three weapons, the most-played classes, and the highest level anyone reached. That's a studio telling you how its game feels in the hand, then showing the data on how people played it.

The same cycle included a developer Q&A with concrete focus-test takeaways: some weapons felt 'sluggish' or 'restrictive' and are being rebalanced, world exploration drew the most positive feedback, and XLGAMES says a key goal is that the game 'feels as good playing solo as it does in a group.' None of that is marketing gloss. It is the studio grading its own combat in public.

The Details

So what is ArcheAge Chronicles, and why does a Warrior reveal land on a Runeterra site? Chronicles is a UE5 action MMORPG from XLGAMES, the original ArcheAge studio, published by Kakao Games, targeting a 2026 launch on PC, Xbox Series S/X, and PlayStation 5. That console-and-PC action-combat lane is the same one Chrono Odyssey and a stack of Korean MMOs are crowding into, and it's the lane a Runeterra MMO would launch into.

The reveal itself is the tell. Two weapons, three distinct skill paths, five named abilities, and a data drop on how testers played is the granular, systems-level detail players pick apart for months before a launch. Riot's game can't have that conversation yet, because Riot hasn't put anything on the table.

The reveal in brief:
  • Warrior: longsword or greatsword. Longsword paths: timing-and-control (Closing Clash, Bladeburst) and a health-for-damage 'path of blood.' Greatsword builds Resolve for Final Cleave, Rampage, and Warrior's Cry. Motto: 'Hold the Line. Break the Enemy.'
  • In lore, the Warrior 'inherits the shadow of Kyrios, the God of Destruction.'
  • Landed a week after a June focus-group infographic covering 165 testers across 2,006 hours, listing the top three weapons, most-played classes, and the highest level reached.
  • ArcheAge Chronicles is a UE5 action MMORPG from XLGAMES, published by Kakao Games, targeting a 2026 launch on PC, Xbox Series S/X, and PlayStation 5.
  • Riot hired former World of Warcraft combat and PvP designer Brian Holinka as a principal game designer on its MMO in June 2026, and has never shown a class or combat for its own game.

What This Means for the Riot MMO

Class fantasy and combat feel are where a Runeterra MMO lives or dies, and they're the single biggest blank in everything we know about Riot's game. Nobody outside Riot knows if it's tab-target or action, what the classes are, what weapons exist, or whether combat leans PvE or PvP. Riot hasn't said.

What we do know is that combat became an active focus in June, when Riot hired Brian Holinka, a former World of Warcraft combat and PvP designer, as a principal game designer. That's real pedigree, and it points at combat as a priority. It also widens the gap, because a marquee combat hire with nothing shown is still nothing shown. The systems he cut his teeth on are the ones every WoW-shaped MMO is still fighting with, right down to WoW's new boss 'Lairs' and the end of the race to tag a boss, the exact group-content problem a Runeterra MMO has to answer.

The sharper contrast is transparency. XLGAMES published what 165 testers did with its game. Riot's playtests stay behind closed doors, so every read on how the MMO plays arrives secondhand. Other studios keep handing players real numbers to argue over, from this focus-group infographic to the quarter-million survey answers WoW Classic diehards gave about raids and flying. Riot fans get a logo and a promise.

And the field isn't waiting. Console action-combat MMOs like ArcheAge Chronicles and Chrono Odyssey are staking out the audience a Runeterra MMO wants, the same sandbox crowd that put 855,525 players into a single world on a Sunday, the market Riot rebooted its whole MMO to chase. Even the old guard is testing the bet in public: a 1999 MMO relaunching this month is running a live beta on the same nostalgia-plus-modern-comforts pitch Riot's reset leans on. When Riot finally shows how its game plays, it won't be judged in a vacuum. It gets judged against every one of these.

Do you trust Riot to nail MMO combat feel more than the new Korean action-MMOs?
