What Happened
On July 13, 2026, Brian Burgee shipped four raid zones. He did it alone. Erenshor is developed and published by Burgee Media, which is one person, and "The Planar March" is the largest update the game has had since release.
Erenshor's whole premise is that it plays like a 2001 MMO with the other people removed. Every name on your friends list, every body in the group frame, every rival ninja-looting a spawn camp is a SimPlayer: a scripted character that levels, groups, trades and raids the way a person would. You are the only human on the server, and the game works hard to make you forget that.
The Planar March adds Brax's Plane of Elements, Fernalla's Plane of The Willow, Vitheo's Plane of Honor and Soluna's Celestial Plane, plus 21 new bosses and more than 130 new items, taking the game to v0.7. Raids seat three groups, 15 characters. Fourteen of those are bots. One of them is you.

Then it got more interesting. A July 15 patch gave guilds a Recruit button that broadcasts a shout to your current zone and tempts nearby SimPlayers into joining, on a cooldown of roughly a minute, with better odds the higher your guild rating. There is a /recruit command if you want to write the pitch yourself, and new members get an automatic welcome message. The bots do not just fill your raid now. They join your guild, and you have to sell them on it.

A July 16 patch fixed the least glamorous item on the list and probably the most important one. A save and load sequencing bug that had been in the game since launch could quietly strip SimPlayers of their ascensions and their level 35 and above spells and skills. Nothing told you it had happened. Your healer just got worse.
The Details
- "The Planar March" went live July 13, 2026; the developer called it the biggest day for the game since launch
- Four raid zones, 21 new bosses and 130+ new items, bringing Erenshor to v0.7
- Raids hold three groups, 15 characters total: 14 SimPlayers and one human player
- The July 15 patch added a guild Recruit button that shouts to your zone and tempts SimPlayers to join, with a cooldown of roughly one minute; higher guild rating improves the odds
- The same patch added a /recruit command for custom recruitment messages and automatic guild welcome messages
- The July 16 patch fixed a save and load sequencing bug, present since launch, that could cost SimPlayers their ascensions and their level 35+ spells and skills
- Erenshor is developed and published solo by Burgee Media; an April 2026 anniversary post said the game had become the developer's full-time job
- Massively Overpowered published an interview on July 18, 2026 in which the developer discussed retention, the use of LLMs, and the road to 1.0 (reported, not independently verified here)
What a Group in Runeterra Already Looks Like
Riot has shown us its version of a group more than once, and the clearest example is still the League cinematic A New Dawn. Watch what it actually depicts.
Garen,
Darius,
Katarina and
Zyra hold a line in the trees.
Rengar throws himself at
Nautilus, which is the one exchange in the whole thing that reads as a boss pull.
Blitzcrank arrives late out of the treeline. And
Ahri goes down in the grass while everyone else keeps swinging.

That shot of Ahri on the ground is the entire design problem in one frame. In a cinematic, the fight is written so somebody comes back for her. In a live service world at three in the morning in a region with a thin population, nobody comes back for her, because nobody logged in. Erenshor's answer is to write the rest of the group.
Runeterra is not short of places built like they want a group. The Immortal Bastion in Noxus, the Howling Abyss in the Freljord, the Tomb of the Emperors in Shurima, the Kinkou Monastery in Ionia, the Mageseekers' Compound in Demacia. We wrote up how much of that is already on the page when we went through Demacia's capital and found a coronation square, a mage-hiding charity and scouts who bond with eagles, and the same is true of the enemies: Evelynn flaying a demon and keeping him alive is a whole class Runeterra has already written.
Which of those locations ends up in Riot's MMO, in what order, at what size, is not something anyone outside the studio knows. Riot has confirmed one thing about the game and one thing only: it is set in Runeterra. Everything past that, including how much of the world you can reach and when, is unrevealed. The map and the crests below are the fiction the game draws on, not a leaked zone list.
What This Means for the Riot MMO
Erenshor is the clearest working answer yet to the question that decides whether a Runeterra MMO feels alive on a Tuesday morning in a quiet region. An MMO's best content sits behind other people being online, and no amount of world-building fixes an empty zone. Burgee's bet is to simulate the crowd outright, and the July 15 guild patch is the tell: SimPlayers stopped being filler bodies and became social actors that join organizations.
Riot has to close the same gap from the opposite side, and its own Los Angeles listings show where. The Staff Software Engineer, Metagame role is chartered to build "the metagame layer: everything around the core gameplay loop that enables progression, collection, personalization, and long-term engagement." A Senior Software Engineer, AI/ML Tools opening sits on the same unpublished R&D product. Read those two together and the question is not whether Riot can build group content. It is whether a player who logs in alone can ever reach it.
The counter-argument is worth taking seriously, and we made it here recently. When Stars Reach shipped sliders for everything, our read was that a yeti wandering into the Shurima desert is exactly what Riot should avoid. Simulation that does not respect the authored world produces nonsense, and a SimPlayer guild is simulation pointed straight at the social layer, which is the part players are least willing to have faked. Fourteen bots that fight competently is a tuning problem. Fourteen bots that pretend to want to be in your guild is a fiction problem.
Two other things make Erenshor land harder than a normal indie patch. One developer shipped four raid zones in a single day, which is a cadence benchmark, and it arrives in a year when large studios look unstable: The Elder Scrolls Online lost its studio head, its executive producer and its game director in the same week. Meanwhile Riot is building the plumbing that would make a live population work at all, and it is doing that in Sydney, where one job ad said the quiet part out loud. The bet there is on real players at scale, not simulated ones. Both bets cannot be equally right.
The last piece is who gets to see any of this. Anyone can drop into EVE's new extraction shooter right now with no invite, while Riot's MMO is still tested behind locked doors. A solo developer patched a group-content system three times in four days because players were in it. Riot cannot iterate on whether solo players can reach group content until solo players are in the build.
- Group-content gating is the biggest retention risk for a Runeterra MMO running across time zones with uneven population
- Riot has an AI/ML Tools engineer opening on the same unpublished R&D product, so assisted or simulated group content is at least on the table
- Erenshor shows a 15-slot raid stays legible with one human in it; the cost is tuning every encounter to bot competence rather than player creativity
- SimPlayers joining guilds points at the harder problem being social rather than combat. A persistent world needs organizations that persist, not just bodies that fight
- Erenshor's save-file bug is the warning: simulated teammates degrade silently, and players blame themselves

Runeterra and its regions. Riot has confirmed the MMO is set in this world and has not revealed its scope, its starting area, or which of these regions appear.
Your Take
Should Riot's MMO let you clear group content with AI companions when nobody else is online?
Reported from Steam (Burgee Media official announcements). The read on the Riot MMO is ours and clearly speculative. Analysis by RuneGrove.
